What is the approach to therapy at Integrative Psychology Services?
We tailor the approach to each client’s needs, and no two cases are identical, however you can generally expect your work with your therapist to follow this pattern:
- Identify and discuss current state (where are you now).
- Identify future state (goals for where you want to be).
- Work together to identify what skills you may be lacking that are needed to progress toward your goals.
- Acquire those necessary skills through practice.
- Utilize those skills in problem areas to achieve your goals.
- Examine milestones you’ve reached and discuss further goals or end the therapeutic process.
I want to get the most out of therapy. What can I do to help?
Your active participation and dedication is crucial to your success. Therapy is not about talking. While venting our thoughts and feelings during therapy can be helpful, engaging in therapy is more about being action oriented outside of sessions. Your weekly treatment plan may include one hour in session, but that still leaves 167 hours outside of session where you work toward your goals. That might seem overwhelming, but by learning the necessary skills, you can begin making the steps.
How often would I come to therapy? How long would therapy last?
This is going to vary for each client and their situation. Some clients come every week, while others come less frequently. Occasionally, some clients come twice in a week if they need extra support during a difficult time. Most clients find that coming weekly is very helpful in the beginning, but that could change over time.
Likewise, our clients come for both short-term and long-term therapy. We are ultimately working toward your criteria for success. Some clients want to move quickly and need only 6-10 sessions, while others need more. Some clients feel that ongoing appointments help them to maintain, or they are constantly excited to identify new areas for growth.
